在法文里，名詞有兩種性別：一種是陽性，另一種是陰性。一般說來，除了在指明男性身分或其擔(dān)任的工作名稱時，可確定其陽性屬性之外，其他名詞的陰陽性均無明顯規(guī)則可尋。大體上，用于事物的名詞，若屬疾病、專門學(xué)科、節(jié)日，及以eur結(jié)尾的抽象名詞等，多是陰性，如：la grippe， la politique， la valeur；而有關(guān)樹木、金屬化學(xué)物質(zhì)、年、月、日、風(fēng)、方位、數(shù)字，以及當(dāng)名詞用的形容詞和不定式等多屬陽性，如：le cuivre， le lundi， le rouge，le d？ner.

　通常，陽性名詞加e即成陰性名詞。
