吟游詩人在歷史上最早是歐洲人對于凱爾特人一些史詩編撰者的稱呼，凱爾特人最早居住在法國一帶，后來因為羅馬帝國的擴張，逐漸退居愛爾蘭和英國，凱爾特人古代有自己的神話和傳統(tǒng)，他們喜歡贊頌自己的神靈，并且編撰自己英雄的傳奇故事，這些故事引人入勝，后來歐洲人也把日耳曼人類似職業(yè)的作者稱作吟游詩人。
