在一定意義上說,美語是在英語基礎(chǔ)上分離出來的一個支系,或者如某些語言學家們所說的,美語是一支一直在美洲土地上的英語(transplanted

language).雖然英語和美語兩種語言的主體部分(語法、詞匯、讀音、拼寫等)是相同的,美語在其發(fā)展過程中受其獨特的歷史、文化、民族、地域等各種因素的影響,形成了自己的特點,與英語有顯著不同.馬克·吐溫就曾說過:“English and American are separate

英語和美語在用詞方面差異甚大,以致在二次大戰(zhàn)中,美國軍方不得不向派往歐洲戰(zhàn)場的美國士兵和后勤人員每人發(fā)一本《生活指南》(A Short Guide to Great

Britain).這其實就是一本美語-英語對照詞典,里面收集了近二百條美國日常生活中使用的,而在英國則是罕見或生疏的詞語,用英國人熟悉而美國人未必知道的對應(yīng)詞語加以對照注釋.與此同時英國軍方也為派往美國受訓的**空軍飛行員每人準備了一本《Notes for Your Guidence》的小冊子,目的也是幫助這些前往美國的英國人學會他們也許根本沒聽說過的美國日常生活用語.

雖然美語在其發(fā)展過程中從未間斷與英語的相互交流,尤其是在二次大戰(zhàn)之后,隨著兩國政治、經(jīng)濟、文化、科技關(guān)系的發(fā)展,英語與美語也相互影響,相互滲透,但這并未能消除英語和美語之間的差異.

本文僅就上面提到的詞語、讀音及拼寫等幾個方面簡要地介紹英語和美語之間的差異,以幫助讀者熟練地掌握運用.

一、詞語方面 這主要指英語和美語在表示相同的事物時,選用不同的詞語,或相同的詞語在英語和美語中具有不同的內(nèi)涵,也指相同的詞語在用法上的不同.

在 H.L.Mencken所著的The American Language(New York.Alfred-A-Knopf,1982)一書中有一段生動的描寫,現(xiàn)引述如下:An

Englishman,walking into his house,does not enter upon the first floor as we do,but upon the ground

floor.When he speaks of the first

floor,he means what we call the second floor,and so on up to the roof,which is

covered,not with tin or shingles,but with tiles or leads.He does not ask for mail but for

letters.There are mail trains in his

country,but in general he reserves the word mail for letters going to or from foreign

countries,and he knows nothing of the pounds so numerous in American,e.g.,mail

car,-man,-box,and -carrier.He uses post instead.The man who brings his post or letters is always a

postman,never a mailman.His outgoing letters are posted,not mailed,at a

letterbox,not at a mailbox.If they are urgent they are sent,not by special

由此可見英語和美語中所用的詞語不同,涉及到生活中許多細小方面.再例如在教育方面,英國人稱之為public school的學校,在美國則叫prep school,指的是由私人贊助,多為富家子弟就讀的私立學校,其目的是準備學生日后進入高等學府深造.美國由 *** 出資興辦的public school在英國則稱作council school,因為這類學校統(tǒng)歸Education Committee of the County Council管轄.英國學校中的班級稱作form,在美國學校中則叫g(shù)rade或class.英國大學中的男生被稱作university men,在美國大學中則被叫做college boys.英國大學中的教師叫staff,統(tǒng)稱之為dons,而在美國大學中則叫faculty.再如,人行道在英國叫pavement,在美國叫sidewalk.英國人把錢包叫做purse或wallet,美國人則叫做pocketbook.而英國叫做 pocketbook的記事本或備忘錄,在美國則叫memorandum book.吃飯時美國人稱最后一道食品為dessert(甜食),英國則只把其中的水果叫dessert

二、讀音方面 英語和美語在讀音上的差異主要反映在元音字母a,o 和輔音字母r

的不同讀音上.

1,在ask,can't,dance,fast,half,path 這一類的單詞中,英國人將字母a 讀作/:/,而美國人則讀作//,所以這些詞在美國人口中就成了/sk/,/knt/,/dns/,/fst/,/hf/和/p/.

2,在box,crop,hot,ironic,polish,spot這一類單詞中,英國人將字母o讀作//,而美國人則將o讀作近似/:/音的//.所以這些詞在美國人讀起來就成了/bkskrphtai'rnikpli/和/spt/.

3,輔音字母r在單詞中是否讀音是英語與美語的又一明顯差異.在英語的r音節(jié)中不含卷舌音/r/,而美語的r音節(jié)中含卷舌音/r/,如下列詞在英語和美語中讀音是不同的:
