故事本身很簡單：一個窮得叮當(dāng)響的年輕水手，瘋狂地愛上了上流社會的、比他大四歲的女子。這個上流社會的女子開始也愛上了這個底層的“原始”“小鮮肉”，但階級差異的存在，使他們的愛情難以為繼。為此，馬丁伊登艱苦奮斗，熬過漫長的絕望期后，終成名作家，終于贏得了心中人的芳心！但是，走上人生巔峰的馬丁伊登，不僅愛情消失殆盡，甚至失去了活下去的欲望，投水自盡——一個水手，居然投水自盡了！

《馬丁伊登》的勵志是不言而喻的，但它之所以成為名著更在于對階級差異、個人奮斗（所謂“美國夢”）、愛情觀等方面進(jìn)行了深刻的哲學(xué)思考，讓人興奮、慨嘆，又讓人深思。

另一部是瑪格麗特. 米切爾的《亂世佳人》（或譯《飄》）

一個生活無憂的、整日被身邊所有年輕帥哥環(huán)繞的十七歲小姑娘斯嘉麗，生活突然被戰(zhàn)爭打破，幾乎失去了一切：父母、情人、上流社會的地位，也許更加要命的是還失去了漂亮的服飾，甚至食物！原來只能披上舞衣的雙肩、只能戴上戒指的雙手，突然要擔(dān)負(fù)起養(yǎng)育全家的重?fù)?dān)！她居然成功地?fù)?dān)起來了！
